Inspire Aspire: GCIM Launch

Character Scotland recently visited Craigie High School in Dundee to deliver a session on the new Inspire Aspire: Global Citizens in the Making programme to around 130 staff and pupils.

A study using the Philosophy for Children programme in primary schools has found that teaching basic philosophical thinking can help improve progress and results in maths and reading.

This week, thousands of young, eager minds filled with a cocktail of nerves, excitement and (sometimes) dread will be opening texts, emails, letters or even listening over the phone for their SQA results. The β€œpoint” of assessment and exams has been a source of debate for years, so what are the reasons for exams within our curriculum, can they be adapted to help foster character education, or is it all one big β€œF”?

Scouting for Character

An article in TES has highlighted the enormous benefits of children who take part in the Scout Association and asked the important question: how can we provide fair opportunties and experiences of character education for all young people?

Whilst resilience is a key character trait to be built for all children, some children are more likely to need to execute this essential skill than others, particularly those from military families; but now a new tool will hope to make it easier for teachers to identify those that may need extra support.

Research from the University of Edinburgh has found that Scottish pupils come out fighting in comparison to other UK pupils when it comes to political engagement.
