Character Scotland is an educational charity formed in 2009 by a group of academics, educationalists and local entrepreneurs. The Character Scotland Network is an informal group of organisations, professionals, practitioners and members of the public who are enthusiastic about personal development and dedicated to supporting the cultivation and recognition of character attributes in Scotland. The Character Scotland website is a central resource of news and information from the charity and the wider network on the subject of character and values.

All the signs indicate that character and values are becoming increasingly important in education. There is a clear recognition that education is not just about preparing pupils for exams. The identified purpose for the Curriculum for Excellence is to “ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need if they are to flourish in life, learning and work, now and in the future.”
