Press release:

Supporting the development of character and values is a responsibility shared by all: parents, young people, teachers, youth workers, employers and communities. On 15th & 16th June, Glasgow will host a dedicated conference on character, culture and values and bring a diverse group of people together to learn from each other, connect on these issues and be inspired to take action.

The conference is being organised by the educational charity, Character Scotland, and is being supported by partners on an advisory group including: Education Scotland, the Confederation of British Industry in Scotland (CBI Scotland), the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), the Improvement Service (IS), Investors in People (IIP), The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, Keep Scotland Beautiful, the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA), the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) and the University of Glasgow.

Dr Avis Glaze, inaugural recipient of the Robert Owen award and recognised international leader in education, will deliver a keynote presentation as will Marvin Berkowitz, Professor of Character Education and Co-Director of the Centre for Character and Citizenship at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Other speakers will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

The organisers hope that the conference will help to engage people in a process of learning and exploration focussing on how children and young people’s character – their values, skills and attributes – can empower, aid transitions and improve outcomes. The charity is reaching out to a wide and diverse audience including young people, parents, teachers, employers, youth and community workers.

The charity’s inspire>aspire poster awards programme has been helping young people to explore character and values since 2009. The current version of the programme has engaged more than 75,000 young people in 45 Commonwealth countries.
Gary Walsh, Executive Officer at the charity, said:

“Education is about more than passing exams or preparing young people for jobs; it is about supporting pupils to become well-rounded people -it is about transforming lives and communities.”

“In Scotland, we have a system that embraces this empowering idea, but we are still at the very first stages of learning what that idea means and what to do about it.”

The event will take place on June 15th -16th at The University of Glasgow and registration is now open. Full registration for the conference (inclusive of both days) costs £90. Day-only registration is available for £50. For further information or to register, please visit www.character.scot/conference. Registration is available until May 22nd 2015.
