About Character Education Scotland

Character Education Scotland is a new charity working with schools, public and voluntary organisations and the business community to develop values based education and training. The charity builds on the excellent work of the Learning for Life project, a UK wide programme of academic research, teaching and learning development and practical activities in schools. The Scottish charity provides a new national context for Scotland and has two primary aims:

To bring key people and organisations together to develop a clear strategy for Character Education in Scotland.

We believe that the emergence and development of Character Education across education and youth service sectors will provide a new pathway to improved results in early intervention work. This will help raise aspirations and inspire attainment in those young people most at risk. We want to bring key people and organisations together to develop a clear strategy for Character Education in Scotland. This new group will champion the aspiration agenda in Scotland and work in partnership to develop the core values and qualities of all of Scotland’s young people.

To empower teachers, youth work professionals, key workers and others with new tools that engage young people in character formation.

We want to empower teachers, youth work professionals, key workers and others with new tools that engage young people in character formation and tackle the barriers to engagement and making positive life progress. We want to share our experiences of Character Education and work closely with those making a difference to the lives of young people. We want to adapt and develop our existing resources to support their important work and help provide evidence of the measurable difference they make to the life prospects of the young people with whom they work.

Character Development Awards

To support our work we have introduced the Character Development Awards which provides a method of certification designed to recognise quality learning in values education and reward individuals of any age for developing and applying positive character attributes to the benefit of themselves and /or others. There are three awards, one for each target group with which we work:

The Explorer Award is deigned for use in Schools, for young people aged between 11 and 16 and can be used across a wide range of abilities.

The Discovery Award is deigned for use with young people in post school training or further education. It may also be useful to youth organisations.

The Achievement Award recognises an individual of any age who has applied their values and demonstrated positive character attributes to affect a personal achievement or a contribution to others.
